NEW DELHI – The government will enhance the "cost norms" of nutritional support under Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 scheme, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Saturday while presenting the Budget for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 are part of the Integrated Nutrition Support Programme which aims to address the challenges of malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.

Sitharaman said the scheme benefits more than 80 million children, with 10 million pregnant women and lactating mothers receiving the benefit, apart from 2,000,000 adolescents in aspirational districts and north-east region.

Sitharaman also announced setting up of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Laboratories in government schools in the next five years to cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation and foster scientific temper among youngsters. Atal Tinkering Laboratories are set up in schools across India as part of the Atal Innovation Mission.

Atal Tinkering Laboratories contains educational and learning 'do it yourself' kits and equipment on science, electronics, robotics, open-source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers and computers.

In an effort to improve accessibility for students in government schools, broadband connectivity will be provided in all government secondary schools under the BharatNet project, the finance minister said. Sitharaman also announced 'Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme' under which the government will provide digital books in Indian languages in schools to allow students to learn in their respective languages and understand the subject better.

The government also announced it will set up five national centres of excellence for skilling with global expertise and partnerships to equip youth. The partnership will cover designing curriculum, training for trainers, and skill certification framework and periodic reviews.

The government will create additional infrastructure to expand the capacity of the five Indian Institutes of Technology started after 2014 to facilitate education for 6,500 more students. Hostel and other facilities at IIT Patna will also be expanded, she said. The government also announced an addition of 10,000 seats in medical colleges and hospitals in the next year as part of the goal to add 75,000 seats in the next five years. The government will also set up a 'Centre of Excellence in AI for Education' with a total budget outlay of INR 5 billion.

The government will implement a scheme for the socio-economic upliftment of urban workers, aimed at improving their incomes and overall quality of lives. The government will revamp the 'PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi' scheme, which will include enhanced loans for street vendors from banks, a Unified Payments Interface lined credit card with a limit of INR 30,000 and other capacity building measures.   End
