Tata Motors Jan sales down 7% on year at 80,304 units due to lower PV sales

MUMBAI – Tata Motors Ltd.'s total vehicle sales in January were 80,304 units, down 7% from 86,125 units a year ago, due to a drop in passenger vehicle sales. The company's total vehicle sales were up 3% over the previous month's sales figure. During the month, the automaker sold a total of 78,159 units in India, against 84,276 units in the year-ago period. This is the company's highest domestic sales figure in three months. While the company's domestic sales fell, its exports rose 16% on year to 2,145 units.
In January, the company sold a total of 48,316 passenger vehicles, including electric vehicles, down 11% from the year-ago period, but up 9% from December. During the month, it sold 48,076 passenger vehicles in India, down 10% from a year ago. The company's exports in this segment declined 40% on year to 240 units. The company recorded sales of 5,240 electric passenger vehicles during the month, down 25% on year.
In January, the company's total commercial vehicle sales were 31,988 units, down from 32,092 units a year ago. The company had sold 33,875 units in December. During the month, the company sold 30,083 commercial vehicles in India, down 2% on year. The company's exports in this segment rose 31% on year to 1,905 units.
During the month, the company's despatches of heavy trucks rose 1% on year to 8,990 units, and those of intermediate, light and medium trucks were up 12% on year at 5,298 units. In the small commercial vehicle category, the company sold 11,213 units, down 15% on year, while in the passenger carriers category, it sold 4,582 units, up 18% on year.
For the 10 months ended January, the company's total domestic vehicle sales were 744,423 units, down 4% from 773,359 units in the year-ago period. During the period, the company sold 303,248 commercial vehicle units, including exports, down 5% from 318,498 units a year ago. For Apr-Jan, total passenger vehicle sales fell 3% on year to 457,580 units.
Tata Motors detailed its earnings on Wednesday. It reported a consolidated net profit of INR 54.51 billion for the December quarter on revenue of INR 1.136 trillion. At 1254 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 711.50 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.6%. End
