MUMBAI – The government will set up daycare cancer centres in all government hospitals in the next three years, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Saturday in her budget speech. Of these, 200 daycare cancer centres will be set up by the government in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Sitharaman said.

Daycare cancer centres are full-service clinics with a daycare facility for getting chemotherapy treatment. The difference between these centres and hospitals is that cancer patients can get the treatments they need without staying in the hospital for a long time.

The government will also provide healthcare to gig workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. "Recognising their contribution, our government will arrange for their identity cards and registration on the e-shram portal. They will be provided healthcare under PM Jan Arogya Yojana. This measure is likely to assist nearly one crore (10 million) gig workers," the finance minister said.

The PM Jan Arogya Yojana is the second component under Ayushman Bharat and was launched on Sept. 23, 2018. The scheme aims at providing a health cover of INR 500,000 per family per year for secondary and territory care hospitalisation to over 120 million poor and vulnerable families. The PM Jan Arogya Yojana was previously known as the National Healthcare Protection Scheme. Further, the finance minister said medical tourism and 'Heal in India' will be promoted in partnership with the private sector, along with capacity building and easier visa norms.

"Broadband connectivity will be provided to all government, secondary schools, and primary health centres in rural areas under the BharatNet project," Sitharaman said. BharatNet, also known as Bharat Broadband Network Ltd., is being set up to provide access to broadband connectivity to all telecom service providers. The objective of this programme is to enable providers such as mobile operators, internet service providers, cable operators, and content providers to launch various services and applications such as e-health, e-education, and e-governance in rural and remote India.  End
