MUMBAI – The Budget has pegged the allocation for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme at INR 860 billion for the next financial year starting Apr. 1, unchanged from the revised estimate of INR 860 billion in FY25. The Budget for FY25 had projected the allocation for the scheme at INR 860 billion.
The scheme, launched in 2006, provides at least 100 days of guaranteed employment a year for every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work. It is a demand-driven programme, and the government has to mandatorily provide funds in case of demand for work.
According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the flagship programme has provided 44.5 average days of employment per household as on Jan. 30, compared with 52.1 last year. End
