Opposition stages symbolic walkout during Budget presentation

NEW DELHI – Members of Opposition parties staged a symbolic walkout in the Lok Sabha during the presentation of the Union Budget for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday. The Opposition members were protesting the stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Wednesday. According to the government, 30 people lost their lives in the stampede and multiple people sustained injuries. 

 

As the House proceedings commenced, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav wanted to speak about the stampede. However, Speaker Om Birla did not allow him and said that the member could speak during the motion of Thanks of President's address. Soon after, members of SP, the Congress, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance started protesting during the Budget speech. 

 

The Opposition members also came into the well of the Lok Sabha chamber and then staged a symbolic walkout during the Budget presentation.

 

The discussion on the President's address will start on Monday and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply on the Motion of Thanks on Tuesday. The discussion on the Budget will start on Feb. 6 and the finance minister will reply on Feb. 11.  

 

The Budget session commenced on Friday and will continue till Apr. 4. During this period, both Houses will be adjourned for recess on Feb. 13 to reassemble on Mar. 10 to enable the standing committees to examine the demands for grants of various ministries/departments and make their reports thereon. The session will provide a total of 27 sittings (nine sittings in first part and 18 sittings in second part) spread over a period of 64 days.  End
