NEW DELHI – In a big setback to the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of assembly elections, seven legislators of the party tendered their resignations on Friday citing various reasons, including "significant deviation from the values and principles on which the party was founded." The legislators stated in their resignations that they have lost faith in the party and National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal.

The legislators who quit the party are – Bhupinder Singh Joon from Bijawasan, Madan Lal from Kasturba Nagar, Bhawna Gaur from Palam, Naresh Yadav from Mehrauli, Rajesh Rishi from Janakpuri, Rohit Mehrauliya from Trilokpuri, and Pawan Sharma from Adarsh Nagar. All these legislators were not given a ticket by the party for upcoming assembly elections.

"I joined the Aam Aadmi Party for honesty. But today I can't see that honesty anywhere. I spoke to several people of my Mehrauli constituency and most of them said that the AAP is completely embroiled in corruption," Mehrauli legislator Naresh Yadav's letter read.

Bijawasan legislator Joon stated in his resignation letter that the AAP was envisioned as a transparent, people-centric organisation committed to eradicating corruption and fostering ethical governance. However, over time, the party has increasingly exhibited traits of centralisation, opacity, and a lack of internal democracy, he said.

The elections for the 70-member Delhi assembly will be held on Wednesday. Votes will be counted on Feb. 8. AAP has governed the national capital for the past decade. It won a thumping majority in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections with 67 and 62 seats, respectively. End
