Sugar federation says India '24-25 output dn 12% on yr at 16.5 mln tn so far

NEW DELHI – As of Friday, mills in India produced 16.5 million tonnes of sugar in the current season ending September, down nearly 12% from 18.7 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The decline comes amid a drop in the number of operational mills and a lower sugar recovery rate, the data showed.
As of Friday, only 494 mills were running crushing operations, against 517 units a year ago. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate, or the amount of sugar extracted while crushing cane, fell to 8.9% from 9.7% last year, the data showed.
As of Friday, 189 mills were running in Maharashtra, against 207 last year. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate fell to 9% from 9.6%, the data showed. Maharashtra produced 5.6 million tonnes of sugar, down 14% from 6.5 million tonnes a year ago.
Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh fell 8.6% to 5.3 million tonnes, amid a fall in the sugar recovery rate to 9.1% from 10.1% last year. A year ago, the state had 120 mills in operation, the data showed. As of Friday, Karnataka produced 3.3 million tonnes of sugar, down 10% on year from last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state fell to 8.5% from 9.7% a year ago, the data showed.
The other sugar producing states include Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. For the entire sugar season ending September, the federation estimates sugar output to fall 15% on year to 27.0 million tonnes from 31.9 million tonnes last year. End
