NEW DELHI – India's services trade surplus widened to a record high of $19.08 billion in December from $14.79 billion in November, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India on Friday. December's surplus exceeded the prior record of $17.09 billion in October.
Services exports rose 16.5% on year to $36.86 billion in December, while imports were up 13.8% at $17.78 billion. Both metrics rose on month. Service exports and imports were $32.01 billion and $17.23 billion, respectively, in November.
The central bank releases provisional monthly data on India's services trade. This data may undergo revision when the balance-of-payments data is released on a quarterly basis.
On the merchandise trade front, the goods trade deficit narrowed sharply last month to $21.94 billion from an all-time high in November, data released on Jan. 15 showed. Goods exports fell 1.0% on year to $38.01 billion in December, while imports rose 4.9% on year to $59.95 billion. End
