NEW DELHI – India is on track to become the third-largest economy in the world due to the efforts of the government, President Droupadi Murmu said in a speech addressing a joint session of the Parliament Friday. Along with the roadmap for financial development of the country, the vision for 'Viksit Bharat 2047' constitutes the roadmap for modern infrastructure in the backdrop of a technological revolution, she said.
The government is implementing new policies at a rapid pace and is prioritising women, the poor, and the youth in its policies, the president said. The government has also focussed on small companies and entrepreneurs by helping them increase their layout under the 'Mudra' scheme to INR 2 million from INR 1 million earlier, she said.
The government has also paid special attention towards providing employment and education for the youth, the president said. The Centre has ensured that more than 10 million young Indians will get internships in the top 500 companies, she said.
"The development of a country like India depends on the support provided by the middle class and their ambitions for a better life. The government has not only embraced the efforts of the middle class but appreciated them as well," Murmu said, citing the implementation of the Eighth Pay Commission for government employees, who are also part of the middle class.
"Recognising the contribution of taxpayers to nation-building, the government has streamlined tax procedures. The implementation of faceless assessments has improved transparency and minimised tax disputes."
Talking about the recent success in space docking, Murmu said it has further paved the way for India to establish its own space station. "The day is not far when an Indian citizen will travel to space aboard the indigenously developed Gaganyaan spacecraft," she said.
The government has worked with strong determination to pull India out of policy paralysis which arose out of the pandemic and war-related uncertainties, Murmu said. The introduction of the goods and services tax system has benefitted all states across the country, she said.
The government has simplified access to credit, thus democratising financial services. Nowadays, items such as loans, credit cards, and insurance are readily available to all, Murmu said. In a bid to develop the infrastructure of the country, the government is working in mission mode to connect every part of the country with highways and expressways, the president said. Contemporary infrastructure has enhanced India's global reputation, elevated investors' confidence in the country, stimulated industries, and generated new job prospects, she said.
There have been record investments in infrastructure over the last six months, Murmu said. With India's metro network crossing the milestone of 1,000 kilometres, India has now become the third-largest country in the world in terms of metro networks, Murmu said.
Along with the government working towards boosting health infrastructure and medical equipment manufacturing, it is also working on creating 75,000 new seats in medical colleges over the next five years.
With the consistent increase in the minimum support price for both kharif and rabi crops, the government has ensured fair prices for crops for farmers and worked towards increasing their income.
To safeguard the nation's borders and maintain internal security, the government has launched significant initiatives, President Murmu said. "From Make in India, we have transitioned to Make for the World, which is also generating new employment opportunities across the country," she said. In a significant event, two warships and a submarine manufactured in India were recently inducted into the Indian Navy. This development supported industries and generated new job opportunities.
The president said that the government is not only working towards a better future for the present generation but for the future one as well. "We are steering the nation towards a green future and green jobs," she said. End
