NEW DELHI - President Droupadi Murmu on Friday hailed the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, and asserted that the situation has changed in Jammu and Kashmir following it. She said the abrogation has led to a new environment of development in the Union territory. The Centre abrogated Article 370 in August 2019.
"The situation changed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. The Lok Sabha and Assembly elections (were) held in Jammu and Kashmir peacefully," she said. The president lauded the people of the Union territory for the peaceful polling.
She also hailed the government's 'one nation one election' initiative. The One Nation One Election bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha and has been referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for wider scrutiny. "The government has taken big decisions on issues such as the Waqf boards and One Nation, One Election," Murmu said.
During the address, she also expressed grief over the stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj. At least 30 people lost their lives and nearly 60 sustained injuries in the stampede in the early hours of Wednesday, Vaibhav Krishna, deputy inspector general of police, Maha Kumbh, said after the incident.
Further, the president said the government believes in women-led development and aims to create 30 million 'Lakhpati Didis'. "My government is committed to fulfilling the dreams of the middle class of having their own house. My government has placed special focus on education of youth and creating new employment opportunities for them," Murmu said. "The government has decided to expand the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to provide new homes to 3 crore (30 million) additional families."
Murmu said the government is also working on enhancing farmers' income. Credit guarantee schemes for micro, small, and medium enterprises and e-commerce export hubs are encouraging businesses in all sectors in the country, she added. End
