NEW DELHI – Residents of Kerala spent a tenth of their Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure for medical purposes in 2023-24 (Aug-Jul)--the highest in India--according to the statistics ministry's report of the latest Household Consumption Expenditure Survey.

As per the report, which was made public on Thursday following the release of the factsheet last month, the share of hospitalisation and non-hospitalisation medical costs in the total Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure was 10.34% in rural Kerala and 9.15% in urban Kerala. The all-India average was 6.83% for rural and 5.85% for urban areas.

At the other end of the spectrum were Meghalaya (1.76% for rural) and Sikkim (2.19% for urban). Curiously, the share of pan, tobacco, and intoxicants in the Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure was the highest for rural Meghalaya, at 9.04%. Arunachal Pradesh, at 6.16%, had the highest share of pan, tobacco, and intoxicants in Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure.

In absolute terms, the monthly medical cost in 2023-24 was INR 683.70 for rural Kerala and INR 712.02 for urban Kerala. People in rural Meghalaya spent a mere INR 67.86 per month on medical-related expenditure, while the amount was INR 305.08 for urban Sikkim.

Meanwhile, the amount spent per person every month in rural Meghalaya on pan, tobacco, and intoxicants was INR 348.32. While highest in the country in terms of share in Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure, this amount was also higher than that in larger states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Punjab, among others, in absolute terms.

Another key expenditure head is rent, with its share in total consumption expenditure being the highest in Chandigarh (7.88%) for rural areas and Karnataka (11.98%) in urban areas. The regions which saw its citizens spend the least on rent in 2023-24 were Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh (0.06%) in rural areas and Manipur (0.76%) in urban areas.

The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey is a crucial source of information for the statistics ministry and is used to update the CPI inflation series. The 2023-24 edition is the second of the back-to-back surveys conducted by the ministry, which is going to use the results of the 2022-23 survey to update the items in the CPI basket and their respective weights.  End
