NEW DELHI – The Union government Thursday convened a meeting of the floor leaders of all parties ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament. The session will start Friday with President Droupadi Murmu's address to both Houses. On Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
Following the meeting, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said 52 leaders of 36 parties attended the meeting convened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. "It was a successful meeting with all party floor leaders," Rijiju said. "We have appealed to all parties that since it is the Budget Session and the first session of this year, it will begin with the President's address. After the address, the Economic Survey will be presented on Friday and the Union Budget will be presented on Saturday."
He also said the duration of discussion on the President's address and Budget will be decided by the Business Advisory Committee. "The Business Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Friday. There will be a holiday on Feb. 5 due to the Delhi elections. There are 16 bills and 19 businesses already listed in the House."
The opposition parties have raised the demand for a discussion on the stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday. Rijiju said the Business Advisory Committee will decide on such issues.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said his party expressed concern over the manner in which the incident occurred at the gathering. "We also expressed concern over the insult of Babasaheb Ambedkar by Home Minister Amit Shah... The Waqf Board meeting was held as if all decisions were already written... We also discussed how the government has completely failed on the economic front," Tiwari said.
Biju Janata Dal leader Sasmit Patra said his party reiterated its long-standing demand for special category status to Odisha.
The first part of the Budget Session will conclude on Feb. 13 and the second leg will start from March 10. The session is scheduled to end on Apr. 4. End
