NEW DELHI – Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday took a swipe at Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, saying that the former Delhi chief minister promised to do clean politics, yet the biggest liquor scam in Delhi occurred during his regime.

"Kejriwal says anything that comes to his mind. When he came, he had a small car and had said that he would do a new kind of politics. He said he would do clean politics, but in Delhi, the biggest liquor scam happened... You must have seen the photo of his house. He stays in a palace. This is the truth," Gandhi said.

Gandhi was addressing a rally at Patparganj in Delhi. Congress has fielded Anil Choudhary from the Patparganj seat against AAP's Awadh Ojha and Bharatiya Janata Party's Ravinder Singh Negi. Taking a jibe at former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Gandhi said that he was the architect of the liquor scam with Kejriwal and has run away from Patparganj seat. Sisodia is contesting from the Jungpura seat.

Gandhi charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for dividing people in the name of religion and caste. He alleged that Modi wants to hand over India's wealth to the billionaires. "They want to make you fight and give your wealth to the billionaires. Even though the companies belong to Adani (Gautam Adani), they are controlled by Narendra Modi," Gandhi said.

"Today the fight is to protect Baba Saheb Ambedkar's Constitution. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat said that we did not get independence on Aug. 15, 1947. His statement is an insult to our Constitution. The country's billionaires like (Mukesh) Ambani and (Gautam) Adani were seen at the Ram Mandir ceremony, but our tribal president (Droupadi Murmu) was not allowed to attend the ceremony. The president was also not allowed to attend the inauguration of the new parliament building," Gandhi said.

The assembly elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase on Feb. 5 and votes will be counted on Feb. 8. Delhi is witnessing a triangular contest between the AAP, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Congress party. The AAP, which has been in power for the last 10 years, swept the 2020 polls, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the rival BJP won the remaining eight seats.

Congress and AAP, part of the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, are contesting the Delhi elections separately. The two parties had contested the Lok Sabha elections jointly in Delhi and Haryana.  End
