MUMBAI - The All India Sugar Trade Association has pegged the country's net sugar output in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) at 26.5 mln tn, down nearly 17% from 31.9 mln tn a year ago. The estimate excludes diversion of sucrose for ethanol production.
Sugar production by mills in Maharashtra, the top manufacturer of the sweetener, is seen at 8.3 million tonnes, down nearly 25% from 11 million tonnes a year ago. Uttar Pradesh's sugar output is seen at 9.0 million tonnes, lower by 13.5% from 10.4 million tonnes a year ago.
The main reason for the decline in sugar production in Uttar Pradesh in the current season is the spread of red rot disease in the western parts of the state and floods in the eastern part, with sugarcane having lower sucrose content leading to lower sugar recovery, according to the trade body. In Maharashtra, too, sugarcane yield is lower due to erratic rains and problems of flowering, it said.
Karnataka's sugar production for the year is seen at 4.0 million tonnes, down 25% from 5.3 million tonnes a year ago. The association sees Tamil Nadu's output at 1.0 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous year.
The trade body has estimated closing stock at 4.5 million tonnes and opening stocks with mills at 7.98 million tonnes. The sucrose diversion for production of ethanol is estimated at about 4.0 million tonnes, the trade body said.
Factories in Maharashtra are likely to stop sugarcane crushing early as there has been substantial increase in capacities in many factories, though the number of mills operating in the state is lower than last year, according to the association. End
