NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the US in February, President Donald Trump told mediapersons following a "productive" call with the former Monday. "I had a long talk with him this morning and he's going to be coming to the White House in the next month, probably in February," the US president told reporters aboard the Air Force One.

On Monday, both leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, "underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations," according to a White House readout of the call between the two leaders.

During the call, Trump emphasised the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trading relationship, the readout said.

The two leaders discussed expanding and deepening cooperation and emphasised their commitment to advance the India-US strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year. "They also discussed a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe," the White House statement said.

On Monday, Modi had shared on X, formerly Twitter, about his talk with Trump over the phone, during which he congratulated him on his historic second term. "We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security," Modi said.

Trump was sworn in as the 47th US president on Jan. 20 at a grand inauguration in Washington, D.C., which was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on behalf of India. The US is India's largest trading partner. The bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record $190 billion in 2023, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Following the return of Trump as the president of the US, repatriation of illegal immigrants and imposing trade tariffs are two pressing issues that directly threaten India. According to media reports, over 20,000 undocumented Indians would be affected if the Trump administration moves on deportations.  End
