NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday spoke to US President Donald Trump over phone and congratulated him on his historic second term at the White House. Following the talks, Modi said that both the sides are committed to mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. "Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security," Modi said on X, formerly Twitter.
Trump was sworn in as the 47th US president on Jan. 20 at a grand inauguration in Washington, D.C., which was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on behalf of India. The US is India's largest trading partner. The bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record $190 billion in 2023, according to the ministry of external affairs.
According to a report by Reuters, the Indian and US diplomats have been trying to arrange a meeting of the two leaders as early as February. However, India's external affairs ministry didn't confirm any such development.
Following the return of Donald Trump as the president of the US, repatriation of illegal immigrants and imposing trade tariffs are two pressing issues that directly threaten India. According to media reports, over 20,000 undocumented Indians would be affected if the Trump administration moves on deportations. End
