NEW DELHI – Amidst tariff hike threats by US President Donald Trump, the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said India and the US share a very strong and multifaceted relationship, which is "very special". India's approach has always been constructive in dealing with trade issues with the US, the ministry said.
"Our approach has always been to address issues in a constructive manner, which is in keeping with the interests of both countries. Whatever issues are there, trade issues are there, we will talk it out, we will discuss... We want to further strengthen it (trade with the US) and further expand it," ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in his weekly briefing.
Jaiswal said the US was one of the largest trade partners of India and the bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record $190 billion in 2023. "We remain in close communication with the US administration and would like to continue to work towards strengthening our economic partnership further. We have regular consultations and dialogue on trade issues," Jaiswal said.
On the issue of illegal immigration, Jaiswal reiterated that India is against illegal immigration, particularly due to its links with various forms of organised crime. "For Indians, not just in the US but all over the world, if they are overstaying or residing in a particular country without proper documentation, we will take them back, provided the documents are shared with us so that we can verify their nationality," he said.
Following the return of Donald Trump as the president of the US, repatriation of illegal immigrants and imposing trade tariffs are two pressing issues that directly threaten India. According to media reports, over 20,000 undocumented Indians would be affected if the Trump administration moves on deportations. End
