India adds 1.61 mln new workers under Employees' State Insurance in Nov

NEW DELHI – India added 1.61 million new workers under the Employees' State Insurance Scheme in November, lower than 1.78 million enrolled in the previous month, the labour ministry said Friday. The new registrations under the scheme in November were only 1% higher than a year ago.
Around 47.11% or 757,000 of the new workers enrolled in November were aged 25 years or below. A total of 20,212 new establishments, 325,000 female employees, and 44 transgenders were registered under the scheme during the month, the ministry said.
The Employees' State Insurance Scheme is a social security scheme that provides medical treatment to registered employees and their families. The scheme applies to establishments that employ 10 or more individuals. Employees earning up to INR 21,000 per month contribute 0.75% of their wages to the scheme, while others contribute 3.25%. End
