NEW DELHI – Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit China for two days to attend a meeting of the foreign secretary-vice minister mechanism between the two countries, the ministry of external affairs said on Thursday. Misri will be in Beijing on Sunday and Monday, the ministry said in a statement. The foreign secretary's visit will focus on resumption of direct flights and visa concerns, sources said.
"The resumption of this bilateral mechanism flows from the agreement at the leadership level to discuss the next steps for India-China relations, including in the political, economic, and people-to-people domains," the external affairs ministry said.
The bilateral dialogues like the foreign secretary-vice minister mechanism and the Special Representatives talks had been on hold for nearly five years in the aftermath of the Galwan Valley clash, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. The decision to revive the dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on Oct. 23.
According to sources, the visit will focus on restarting direct flights between the two countries and strengthening economic ties. The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage would also be on the agenda, sources said.
In 2020, India had imposed visa restrictions on Chinese nationals and suspended direct flights to and from the neighbouring country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. End
