Dec domestic air passenger traffic 14.9 mln, up 8.2% on year

MUMBAI - Indian airlines carried 14.93 million domestic passengers in December, up 8.2% from 13.79 million passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a report Thursday. During 2024, domestic airlines carried 161.33 million passengers, up 6.1% from 152.03 million in 2023.
Among the domestic airlines, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet increased their market share in December. The market share of the Tata Group-owned Air India, which includes data of Air India Express and Vistara, rose to 26.4% from 24.4% in November. The market share of IndiGo was 64.4% against 63.6% in November. SpiceJet's market share rose to 3.3% in December, from 3.1% in November. Akasa Air's market share declined slightly to 4.6% in December from 4.7% last month.
In December, Alliance Air, Akasa Air, IndiGo, Indiaone Air, Star Air, and Fly91--all saw an increase in passenger load factor from the previous month. However, airlines such as Air India, SpiceJet, and Fly Big saw a decline in the passenger load factor in December. Passenger load factor, which measures an airline's efficiency in filling its seats to generate revenue, was the highest for Akasa Air at 93.3% in December, followed by IndiGo at 90.6%.
Alliance Air's passenger load factor increased to 77.7% in December from 74.3% the previous month, Akasa Air's passenger load factor rose to 93.3%, up from 92.6% in November, and that of IndiGo marginally rose to 90.6% in December from 90.3% a month ago.
Indiaone Air's passenger load factor increased to 87.2% in December from 82.9% in November. Fly91's passenger load rose to 82.7%, up from 73.8% in the previous month. Star Air's passenger load factor increased to 78.3% in December from 73.4% in November.
However, Air India's passenger load factor declined to 84.7% from 87.3% the previous month and that of SpiceJet fell marginally to 87.4% from 87.9% in November.
Across the four metros, IndiGo reported the best on-time performance of 73.4% in December, followed by Air India at 67.6%. The third-best performer was Akasa Air, with an on-time performance of 62.7%, followed by SpiceJet with 61.5%, and Alliance Air at 55.6%.
The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in December was 1.07%, the DGCA report said. Among the airlines, FlyBig reported the highest cancellation rate of 19.23%, followed by Alliance Air at 4.35%. Indiaone Air reported the third-highest cancellation rate of 2.83% in December. Air India reported the lowest cancellation rate of 0.31%.
A total of 817 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in December, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in December was about 0.55. Flight problems, the major reason for passenger complaints, accounted for 24.6% of the total passenger complaints.
On Thursday, shares of IndiGo parent Interglobe Aviation closed at INR 4,134.80 on the National Stock Exchange, up 3.1%. On the BSE, shares of SpiceJet closed at INR 48.61, down 0.7%. End
