India gets 60% below normal rain at 1.6 mm in week ended Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received average rainfall of 1.6 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 60% below the normal of 3.9 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. The south peninsula region was the only homogenous region to record above-normal rainfall, while the other three regions recorded below-normal precipitation.

 

Rainfall in east and northeast India was 99% below normal during the week at 0.1 mm. Northwest India received 73% below normal rains at 2.2 mm and the central part of India received no rainfall, against the normal of 1.2 mm, the data showed. However, south peninsular India recorded 4.3 mm of rainfall, a whopping 208% higher than normal rainfall for the week. 

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was 'large excess' in five and 'excess' in one. One subdivision received normal rainfall during the week. Three subdivisions received 'deficient' rains, nine had 'large deficient' rains and 17 subdivisions received no rainfall during the week. 

 

Since Jan. 1, India has received 4.3 mm of rainfall, 62% below the normal of 11.3 mm for the period.  End
