NEW DELHI – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Washington, D.C. and emphasised the Trump administration's desire to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration, the spokesperson of the US Department of State said.

Rubio held his first bilateral meeting with his Indian counterpart after assuming office as Secretary of State. The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including opportunities to further deepen the US-India relationship, in particular on critical and emerging technologies, defence cooperation, and energy. The first bilateral meeting with Jaishankar underlines the importance the Trump administration attaches to strengthening ties with India.

The leaders affirmed a shared commitment to continuing to strengthen the partnership between the US and India. They also discussed regional issues and advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared on X, formerly Twitter, that they reviewed the extensive bilateral partnership, of which Rubio has been a strong advocate, and also exchanged views on a wide range of regional and global issues.

Jaishankar also held a meeting with Mike Waltz, the US National Security Advisor, at the White House. The two leaders explored ways to strengthen the India-US partnership, which benefits both nations and contributes to global stability and prosperity.

Jaishankar also attended the Quad foreign ministers meeting, held within hours of the inauguration of Donald Trump. The meeting was also attended by foreign ministers Penny Wong from Australia, Takeshi Iwaya from Japan, and Rubio. Jaishankar said that during the meeting, the leaders discussed different dimensions of ensuring a free, open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

"Agreed on the importance of thinking bigger, deepening the agenda and intensifying our collaboration. The meeting sends a clear message that in an uncertain and volatile world, the Quad will continue to be a force for global good," Jaishankar said on X.

The Quad is a strategic forum comprising four nations -- the US, India, Australia and Japan. Among the primary objectives of the Quad is to work for a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.  End
