Aluminium Institute says global output up 3.3% on month in December

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium rose 3.3% month-on-month to 6.24 million tonnes in December, data from the International Aluminium Institute showed. Year-on-year, production rose 3% from 6.05 million tonnes a year ago.

 

Global daily average aluminium production fell to 201,161 tonnes in December from a revised figure of 201,233 tonnes for November. In 2024, total production of the metal rose 2.9% on year to 72.76 million tonnes from 70.72 million tonnes in 2023.

 

In China, aluminium production rose by 120,000 tonnes to 3.73 million tonnes in December, the data showed. The country accounts for nearly 60% of global production of the metal. Daily average aluminium production in China fell slightly to 120,194 tonnes last month from 120,200 tonnes in November.

 

In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 409,000 tonnes in December from 397,000 tonnes in November. In Africa, the output in December was up by 4,000 tonnes to 137,000 tonnes.

 

In the Gulf Cooperation Council, the other major aluminium-producing region after China, production increased by 17,000 tonnes to 531,000 tonnes in December. In western and central Europe, production rose to 248,000 tonnes last month from 238,000 tonnes in November. Output of the metal in North America increased by 11,000 tonnes to 338,000 tonnes in December, and by 4,000 tonnes to 130,000 tonnes in South America.

 

Global alumina production in November fell 3.4% on month to 12.21 million tonnes, as per the latest available data. At 0850 IST, the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was down 0.3% at $2,683.0 per tonne. End
