Donald Trump returns to White House, says 'golden age of America begins now'

NEW DELHI – Donald J. Trump on Monday took oath as the 47th president of the US in a grand ceremony held in Washington, D.C. and asserted that the "golden age of America begins now". US Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Trump. J.D. Vance was sworn in as the vice president of the US.
In his inaugural address as 47th president, Trump described Jan. 20 as liberation day and said that his administration will put "America first" and make the country greater and stronger. "The golden age of America begins right now. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will simply put America first. America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world," he said.
Trump also said that he would declare a national energy emergency to bring down escalating energy prices. The US would drill its oil reserves and export American energy to the world, he said. "I will direct all members of my Cabinet to marshal the vast powers at their disposal to defeat what was record inflation, and rapidly bring down costs and prices. The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices and that is why, today, I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will drill, baby, drill," he said.
"America will be a manufacturing nation once again, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have: the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on earth, and we are going to use it. We will bring prices down, fill our strategic reserves up again and export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help us do it," he said.
Further, Trump announced that he will impose tariffs and tax countries. He announced the establishment of the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties and revenue. "I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens," he said.
Among other major announcements, Trump said he would declare a national emergency at the southern border to prevent illegal immigration from Mexico. "All illegal entries will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal 'aliens' back to the places from which they came. We will reinstate my 'Remain in Mexico' policy... and I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country," he said.
On Monday, Trump took oath as US president for the second time. He had earlier served as the 45th president of the US from Jan. 20, 2017, to Jan. 20, 2021. He is also only the second president in the US to have a non-consecutive second term in the White House. Before him, Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th US president, had non-consecutive presidential terms.
The inauguration ceremony was held inside the Capitol Rotunda, a circular space beneath the dome of the Capitol, due to cold weather conditions. Outgoing president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris, former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, and several other dignitaries graced the occasion.
The ceremony was attended by guests from across the world, including Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, foreign ministers of Japan and Australia, Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Minister of External Affairs of India S. Jaishankar represented the country at the inauguration ceremony. Industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his wife Nita Mukesh Ambani were also in attendance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated President Trump on X, saying he looks forward to working closely together with the latter. "Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries, and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead!" Modi posted on X.
The US presidential elections were held in November. Trump, a Republican nominee, defeated Democrat nominee Kamala Harris. He secured 312 electoral votes, while Harris got 226 out of the total 538 electoral votes.
