MUMBAI – Wet spell over the western Himalayan region is likely to continue till Thursday and over the plains of northwest India over Wed-Thu, the India Meteorological Department said Monday. The weather bureau also said light-to-moderate rainfall is likely over parts of southern India during the same period.

Three weather systems that lie over different parts of the north and northwest are likely to cause continuous precipitation in these regions. The western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over northern Pakistan and neighbourhoods of lower tropospheric levels. There is also another western disturbance like a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric levels. The weather bureau also said an induced cyclonic circulation lies over western Rajasthan in lower tropospheric levels.

Under the influence of the above weather systems, isolated-to-scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, east Rajasthan, and west Uttar Pradesh on Wed-Thu, the IMD said.

The weather bureau also said a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius is likely over Maharashtra during the next three days and no significant change will be seen during the subsequent two days. In the Gujarat region, minimum temperatures are likely to remain unchanged for the next two days and fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius the subsequent three days.

Dense fog conditions are likely to prevail during the night and early morning hours in parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha during the week. Cold day conditions are likely over a few pockets of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, the IMD said.

Moving to southern India, the weather bureau said a cyclonic circulation lies over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka at middle tropospheric levels. It also said strong northeasterly winds are likely over the Tamil Nadu coast. This weather system is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala till Thursday and scattered light to moderate precipitation over Lakshadweep till Tuesday.

In view of the above weather, the Met department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Comorin area and adjoining Gulf of Munnar till Wednesday. The warning was also given for the south Sri Lanka Coast and southwest Bay of Bengal till Tuesday.  End
