NEW DELHI – As many as 16 Indian nationals serving in the Russian army have been declared missing by Russian authorities while 13 have died fighting against Ukraine, the ministry of external affairs said Friday. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there have been a total of 126 cases of Indians serving in the Russian army so far. Of these, 96 people have been discharged and have returned home. Of the remaining 30, 16 are categorised as missing, 13 died in the war, and one person was still serving in the army.
According to sources, most of the 16 missing persons belong to the country's northern and western states. The ministry did not, however, reveal the addresses of these people.
Responding to the increased US sanctions on the Russian energy sector, Jaiswal said the government was in touch with the American authorities to assess the impact on Indian entities. "The additional sanctions that have been announced pertain to several entities and individuals in the Russian energy sector," he said. "We are in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues about the impact on Indian entities. Our oil purchases have been and always are guided by our own energy security requirements along with prevailing global circumstances and market conditions."
The US administration on Jan 10 slapped sanctions on more than 200 entities and individuals, including major Russian oil producers Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, Russian insurance companies, and shadow fleet vessels. "The United States is imposing sanctions today on more than 200 entities and individuals involved in Russia's energy sector and identifying more than 180 vessels as blocked property," Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said. "This wide-ranging, robust action will further constrain revenues from Russia's energy resources and degrade (President Vladimir) Putin's ability to fund his illegal war against Ukraine." End
