NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Friday launched the much-awaited e Vitara, based on the company's already launched 'eVX' concept, for the domestic market at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 here. The company, however, did not reveal the price range of the vehicle.

The car will be competing against rivals like the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV and the recently launched Hyundai Creta electric SUV. The vehicle was jointly developed with Toyota Motor Co., which sells its own iteration of the model termed Urban Cruiser EV. The e Vitara will be made in India and exported to Japan and Europe. The company aims to export India-made e Vitara to over 100 countries.

Executives from the company said on Friday that it will set up 1,500 EV-enabled workshops across 1,000 cities. They added that e Vitara is part of Suzuki's technology strategy for the next 10 years.

In November, Suzuki Motor Corp. had announced that the production for the company's first mass-production battery electric vehicle will begin at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant in India in the spring of 2025. The e Vitara is based on its concept model eVX, which was showcased at the Auto Expo held in India in January 2023. The company invested over INR 21 billion for the e Vitara manufacturing platform in India.

The carmaker had earlier said that its new electric sports utility vehicle will have a range of over 500 kilometres on one full charge. Cars based on the 'eVX' concept will be powered by a 60 kilowatt-hour battery pack offering up to 550 kilometres of driving range, the company had earlier said. The electric sports utility vehicle concept was designed and developed by Suzuki Motor Corp.

The e Vitara will be available in two battery options--49 kWh and 61 kWh. The company did not reveal the number of variants of the vehicle and when the bookings will commence.

At 1520 IST, shares of Maruti Suzuki traded 0.12% higher at INR 12,106.40 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
