NEW DELHI - The Union Cabinet Thursday approved refarming of over 1,100 megahertz of spectrum from several ministries to support the rollout of advanced 5G and future 6G services, government sources aware of the developments said. Refarming of spectrum refers to repurposing frequencies that were allocated to one technology for another.
According to the sources, spectrum from the 1-6 gigahertz and 6 GHz bands will be refarmed and auctioned for 5G and 6G services. While the Cabinet approved the refarming Thursday, the decision was not announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the post-meeting press briefing.
In 2024, the Cabinet had approved the establishment of a committee of secretaries to work on spectrum refarming. According to media reports, experts see spectrum demand rising in India as 5G technology adoption widens. End
