Water level in India's key reservoirs 123.805 bcm as of Thu, 68% of capacity

MUMBAI – The water level in 155 key reservoirs of the country was 123.805 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, down from 127.921 billion cubic metres a week ago, data from the Central Water Commission showed. Of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres, the current water level is at 68% of the capacity, the data showed.

 

The water level as of Thursday was up 23% from a year ago and 21% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.

 

The total live storage capacity has fallen in all regions across the country since last week. In the northern region, the water levels in reservoirs was 8.016 billion cubic metres, 40% of the total live storage capacity against 51.7% a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. 

 

In the western region, water levels as of Thursday were 29.809 billion cubic metres, which is 80% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the same period last year, the water levels were 67% of the total live storage capacity. Only one of the 50 reservoirs in the region was full, while seven had 91-99% of their capacity. Two reservoirs in the western region had water below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 34.518 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, water levels stood at 72% of the total live storage capacity compared to 64% in the previous year.

 

Water levels in the southern region stood at 37.850 billion cubic metres, 69% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. The water level in the region during the same period last year was just 37% of the total live storage capacity.

 

In the southern region, four reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity with three reservoirs full, the data showed. There were two reservoirs in the southern region with water at 40% and below the storage capacity or less.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 13.612 billion cubic metres, which was 65.4% of the total live storage capacity, little changed from 65.2% in the corresponding period last year.

 

Of the 155 reservoirs, 145 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 10 reported storage at 80% or lower of the live capacity. Out of these 10 reservoirs, four reservoirs have water storage of up to 50% of normal storage.

 

Since Jan. 1, the country has received 63% below normal rainfall at 3.0 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
