NEW DELHI – The government Thursday approved the formation of the eighth Central Pay Commission, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Vaishnaw said that while the decision was not discussed by the Cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given his acceptance to create the same for all employees of the central government.
"Since 1947, there have been seven pay commissions. And as per the Prime Minister's resolve to set up pay commissions with a 'regular rhythm', the last pay commission was started in 2016. Its term ends in 2026. So well before that, in 2025, the establishment of the eighth pay commission gives sufficient time so that the recommendations can be received well before the completion of the period of seventh pay commission," Vaishnaw said.
The minister said as part of the commission's work, there will be "massive consultations" with state governments and other stakeholders, including the central government and public sector undertakings. The chairman of the commission and its two members will be appointed soon, he added.
According to government officials, around 5 million central government employees, including defence personnel, will benefit from this move, and approximately 6.5 million pensioners, including defence personnel, will see an uptick in their pensions.
"This will provide a significant boost to consumption and economic growth, along with improved quality of life for government employees," one of the officials cited above said. The seventh pay commission had seen an expenditure increase of INR 1 trillion in the first year of its term—2016-17 (Apr-Mar), a second official said. End
