NEW DELHI – Justice K. Vinod Chandran was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge Thursday. With this, the apex court is now one short of its sanctioned strength of 33 judges. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Chandran, who was earlier the chief justice of the Patna High Court. The government had on Monday cleared the collegium's recommendation for Justice Chandran's appointment as a Supreme Court judge.
"Mr Justice Chandran stands at Sl. (Serial) No. 13 in the combined all-India seniority of high court judges. In the seniority of judges hailing from the High Court of Kerala, Mr Justice K. Vinod Chandran stands at Sl. No. 1," the collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, said in its recommendation on Jan. 7. Justice Chandran will retire in April 2028 after a tenure of more than three years.
Among his notable judgments, Justice Chandran, as a Kerala High Court judge, had ruled in favour of two Muslim girls who wanted to wear a hijab and full-sleeve dress while appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education's All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test in 2015. Further, in 2024, a Patna High Court bench, comprising Justice Chandran, struck down the enhanced reservation of 65% in government jobs and educational institutions in Bihar. Justice Chandran had held that raising the reservation beyond 50% was bad in law as per the principles of equality in the Constitution.
