India receives 64% below normal rainfall in week ended Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received a weighted average rainfall of 1.3 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 64% below the normal of 3.6 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. All the four homogeneous regions in the country recorded below-normal precipitation during the week.
Rainfall in east and northeast India was 59% below normal during the week at 1.2 mm. Northwest India received 68% below normal rains at 2.1 mm, while central India received 87% below normal rainfall at 0.2 mm, the data showed. South Peninsular India recorded 2.0 mm of rainfall, 11% below the normal rainfall for the period.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was 'large excess' in seven and 'excess' in four subdivisions. Two subdivisions each received 'normal' and 'deficient' rainfall, while seven and 14 got 'large deficient' and 'no rain', respectively, during the week.
Since Jan. 1, India received 2.7 mm of rainfall, 63% below the normal of 7.4 mm for the period. End
