Govt clears Bombay HC Chief Justice Upadhyaya to head Delhi High Court

NEW DELHI – The government Tuesday cleared the name of Bombay High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya for transfer as chief justice of the Delhi High Court. His place in the Bombay High Court will be taken by Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe.
"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court," according to a notification from the law and justice ministry.
Upadhyaya had enrolled as an advocate in 1991 and practised on the civil and constitutional side at the Allahabad High Court. He was appointed chief standing counsel for the state of Uttar Pradesh in May 2007 and continued to hold that office until his elevation as a judge of the high court. Upadhyaya was appointed as a puisne judge of the high court in 2011 and took oath as permanent judge in 2013. He was transferred to the Bombay High Court as chief justice in 2023.
The Delhi High Court has been working under Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru after Chief Justice Manmohan was elevated to the Supreme Court in December.
The government Tuesday also approved the transfer of Telangana High Court Chief Justice Aradhe to the Bombay High Court. Justice Aradhe had enrolled as an advocate in 1988 and handled civil, constitutional, arbitration, and corporate matters in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur. He was appointed as an additional judge of the high court in 2009 and as a permanent judge in 2011. Thereafter, he was transferred to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2016. After serving as a judge in the Karnataka High Court, Aradhe became chief justice of the Telangana High Court in 2023. End
