NEW DELHI – Wholesale despatches of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers touched a record high in the December quarter. Yet, it was two-wheelers which staged a resurgence after a brief lull to emerge as the top-performing segment in 2024, as per data released Tuesday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. However, December wholesales in India made for a more sober reading for all segments, except passenger vehicles.
Growth in the automobile sector in 2024 was primarily driven by bikes and scooters with 19.54 million two-wheelers being sold in India during the year, up 14.5% from a year ago. Passenger vehicles registered record-high domestic despatches in 2024 at 4.3 million units, up 4.2% from a year ago. Despatches of three-wheelers too touched a record high in 2024, with 728,670 units sold in the country, up 6.8% from sales in 2023.
Growth in passenger vehicle despatches outshone other segments in December with 270,704 units being sold in India, up 11.4% on-year. Exports of passenger vehicles in the final month of 2024 rose 29.8% on-year to 78,870 units.
In December, the overall automobile despatches in India decreased 5.1% on-year to 1.43 million units. Overseas, wholesales increased 29.0% on-year to 479,426 units. Production of automobiles rose 1.3% on-year to 1.92 million units in December.
Automobile wholesale sales in India were 6.36 million units in Oct-Dec, up 3.1% from a year ago, while exports increased 25.1% to 1.40 million units. Around 7.59 million units were produced during the quarter, up 6.4% from a year ago.
The wholesale despatches in India in 2024 increased 11.6% on-year to 25.50 million units. Companies exported 5.10 million units in 2024, up 19% from 2023. Production of automobile units increased 12.8% to 30.61 million units in 2024.
PASSENGER VEHICLES
Indians' preference for passenger cars decreased at a rapid rate in 2024, with domestic sales declining by 14.4% to 1.37 million units. Companies cut back production of passenger cars as well, with output declining by 12.6% to 1.78 million units in 2024.
Utility vehicles continued to find favour with 2.75 million units sold locally in 2024, up 16.8% compared to the year before. Companies exported 323,621 utility vehicles in 2024, up 33 from a year ago.
Despite the low base, wholesales of vans in India increased by a modest 5.2% to 153,793 units in 2024. Yet, in December, its growth remained better than small cars and utility vehicles, as companies sold 11,678 vans to dealers, up 16.3% on-year. Production of vans in December increased 22.7% on-year to 12,788 units.
TWO-WHEELERS
Wholesale two-wheeler despatches in 2024 were driven by double-digit growth in all three segments - scooters, motorcycles and mopeds. Within the three, scooters were an outlier in December, Oct-Dec and 2024.
Despatches of motorcycles, which accounted for around 63% of the overall two-wheeler segment in India, reported a 11.9% growth at 12.35 million units in 2024. Despatches of motorcycles to dealers in December fell 14.9% to 653,808 units. However, companies exported 332,036 motorcycles in December, up 32% on-year.
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
Commercial vehicles endured a difficult 2024 with wholesale despatches slowing down by lack of a pick-up in government orders owing to the General Elections. Total domestic commercial vehicle despatches fell 2.7% to 951,991 vehicles in 2024. Overseas demand was better, as exports rose 5.9% to 72,511 units in 2024. Companies opted to manufacture a lower number of commercial vehicles in 2024, as production fell 4.2% to 1.02 million units.
Passenger carriers, including light, medium and heavy varieties, were the only category which saw a production output and sales increase in 2024.
THREE-WHEELERS
Strong demand for passenger carriers is reflected in the three-wheeler varieties as well, as the category drove the segment's growth in 2024. Companies manufactured 1.03 million three-wheelers in 2024, up 5.2% from a year before. Out of this, they sold 728,670 units to dealers in India, up 6.8%.
Companies sold 298,235 three-wheelers to dealers abroad in 2024, up 2.2% on year. The growth of three-wheeler exports typically trails domestic sales as many markets do not permit the usage of three-wheelers.
In 2024, demand for electric three-wheelers saw some moderation as e-rickshaw sales in India fell to 20,122 units from 35,345 units in 2023. In December, e-rickshaw sales fell to 1,098 units from 2,147 the year before.
Sales of quadricycles continued to dwindle in India but found robust favour elsewhere. In India, despatches of quadricycles fell to 216 units in 2024 from 909 units in 2023. Companies exported 6,926 quadricycles in 2024, up 83% on year.
