NEW DELHI – Foreign tourist arrivals in India fell 1.4% from a year ago to 820,294 in October, data released by the tourism ministry showed. The tourist arrivals in October were 13.2% lower than the pre-pandemic period of October 2019.

In September, 669,573 foreign tourists had arrived in India. In the January to October period, foreign tourist arrivals in India were around 7.68 million, up 2.8% on year.

In October, the maximum number of tourists were from the US and accounted for 16.4% of the total arrivals, followed by Bangladesh and the UK. Of the total arrivals in October, 48.0% came to India for leisure, holiday and recreation, while 26.6% of the tourists were from the Indian diaspora.

Delhi saw the biggest influx of tourists at 37.5% of the total arrivals in October, followed by Mumbai at 15.2%, and Haridaspur at 7.8%.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourist arrivals rose 31.6% on year to INR 250.10 billion in October. In dollar terms, foreign exchange earnings rose 30.3% on year to $2.98 billion in October.

Around 2.4 million Indian nationals travelled abroad in October, up 4.8% from a year ago. Around 27.2% of the total travelled to the United Arab Emirates and 11.8% to Saudi Arabia.  End
