NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched Mission Mausam at the India Meteorological Department's 150th Foundation Day, saying that the mission aims to make India future-ready and climate-smart. The mission will also help improve localised weather forecasts, weather observation infrastructure for hilly terrain, and integrate weather data into disaster management plans, he added.

In December, the government had allocated INR 20 billion over two years for Mission Mausam to position India as a global leader in weather and climate sciences. The demand for India Meteorological Department's data will only increase in the future, domestically and globally, Modi said at the event.

Recalling the lives lost during Gujarat's Kutch cyclone in 1998 and the super cyclone over Odisha in 1999, the Prime Minister pointed out that the weather department's early warnings are the backbone of disaster management and safeguarding lives. He also released a commemorative coin and stamp to mark the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department.

"Tropical cyclones used to claim tens of thousands of lives. Thankfully, this is a nightmare of the past," Celeste Saulo, secretary general, World Meteorological Organization, said at the event. She cited how India's weather department gave timely forecasts and warnings during the 2023 cyclone Mocha and limited widespread damage.

India Meteorological Department's flash flood guidelines systems are not only safeguarding Indians but also the larger South Asia, she added. Saulo pointed out how the Met Department translates complex science into actionable guidelines and leverages science to serve society.

Stressing the need for climate action, Saulo said 2024 was the hottest year on record, 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures. "The cost of climate inaction is heavier than the cost of climate action," she added.

India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the agency has detailed the roadmap to improve the accuracy of local forecasts and detect severe weather events. He also presented the IMD Vision-2047 document for weather forecasting, weather management, and climate change mitigation.

Recalling the progress of the India Meteorological Department from 1875 to date, Jitendra Singh, minister of state in the Ministry of Earth Science, said India's weather department now tracks weather from land, space, and sea. India aims to give advanced early warnings and build a weather-ready India, he added. End
