NEW DELHI - India's WPI inflation rose to 2.37% in December from 1.89% in November mainly because of an unfavourable base effect, data released Tuesday by the commerce ministry showed. WPI inflation was 0.86% in December 2023.
At 2.37%, WPI inflation in December was in line with the consensus expectation. According to an Informist poll, WPI inflation was seen at 2.4% in December. The October print of WPI inflation was revised higher to 2.75% from the provisional print of 2.36%.
The all commodity index was down 0.4% on month in December, pulled down by a 2.1?cline in the primary articles index from November and a 2.2?ll in the food index.
Within food, the deceleration was led by the vegetables index, which fell 13.2% on month in December. The fall in vegetable prices was led by tomatoes and onions, which sequentially fell 18.6% and 17.9%, respectively, in December. Additionally, wholesale potato prices declined 4.6% on month in December. Apart from vegetables, prices of pulses also fell in December, down 3.0% from the previous month.
Manufactured products inflation rose slightly to 2.14% in December from 2.00% in November, while the index remained unchanged from the previous month.
Fuel and power inflation rose to (-)3.79% in December from (-)5.83% in the previous month. The index rose 1.9% sequentially last month.
Wholesale core inflation, which excludes food and fuel items, rose to a five-month high of 0.7% in December from 0.5% in November.
"The prices of major vegetables, such as tomato, onion and potato, have declined quite sharply on a sequential basis in January so far," Rahul Agrawal, senior economist at ICRA, said. "However, the relatively lower weight of vegetables in the WPI vis-a-vis the CPI, would limit the benefits on this account to the headline WPI inflation in the month." ICRA expects the headline WPI inflation to rise further to around 3.0% in January.
