--Sitharaman: Need tech-savvy forces in country to protect digital economy

 

DEHGAM - India needs tech-savvy forces to help protect its digital economy from cyberattacks, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Monday. "Because of the strength of the digital access, you have people targeting them. As much as we need forces to take care of our borders, we need forces within the country who are tech savvy and conscious of the threats before us and protect the digital world, which is a big catalyst for our economy, to grow leaps and bounds," she said.

 

Sitharaman was addressing students at the fourth convocation of Rashtriya Raksha University in Dehgam, a district of Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

 

On the defence sector, the finance minister reiterated that India is becoming a hub for defence exports in the world. Today, India is a net exporter of defence components, she said, highlighting a jump in India's defence exports to INR 210.8 billion in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar), from INR 6.9 billion in FY14.

 

From being the second-biggest importer of defence equipment in the 2015-2019 period, India today ranks among the top 25 defence equipment makers, she said, adding that India's indigenous defence production jumped 2.7 times to INR 1.27 trillion in FY24.  End
