NEW DELHI – The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday announced financial support to residents' welfare associations to hire security guards if it returned to power in Delhi. Former Delhi chief minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal made the announcement during a press conference and said that the guidelines for the financial aid and number of guards to be hired will be laid down later.
The AAP has been targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party over the issue of law and order in the national capital as the Delhi police come under the Central government-led by the BJP and its allies. The Kejriwal-led party has been raising the issue of law and order in its rallies for the Delhi Assembly elections.
"The rate of crime has been increasing in Delhi. It is our priority to ensure the security of the people of Delhi. The AAP government will provide funds to all the residents' welfare associations in Delhi to hire security guards," Kejriwal said.
Countering the BJP's allegations that the AAP government was hostile to the Purvanchal community, Kejriwal said that his government did a lot of work for the development of Purvanchal community and slums. "We laid water and sewer lines in slums, built schools and hospitals," he said. People from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are referred to as Purvanchali and make up roughly 30% of Delhi's total population.
Earlier, Kejriwal had announced several welfare schemes for senior citizens, backward classes, women and priests as the party seeks a third term in the national capital. The assembly elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase on Feb. 5, and votes will be counted on Feb. 8, the Election Commission of India had announced Tuesday. The AAP, which has been in power for the last 10 years, swept the 2020 state polls, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the rival Bharatiya Janata Party could muster only eight seats. The Congress even failed to open its account. End
