MUMBAI – The water level in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 127.921 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 132.293 billion cubic metres a week ago, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 71% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres.

 

The water level as of Thursday was up 24% from a year ago and 21% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. The normal storage is the average storage for the preceding 10 years.

 

The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 13.936 billion cubic metres, which was 67% of the total live storage capacity, little changed from the corresponding period last year.

 

Water levels in the western region were 30.382 billion cubic metres, which is 81% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in this region. During the same period last year, the water levels were 69% of the total live storage capacity. Only one of the 50 reservoirs in the region was full, while eight had 91-99% of the capacity. As of Thursday, one reservoir in the western region had water below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

 

In the northern region, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in reservoirs was 8.377 billion cubic metres, 42% of the total live storage capacity against 54% a year ago.

 

In the central region, the water level in reservoirs was 35.535 billion cubic metres, which was 74% of the total live storage capacity compared to 66% in the previous year.

 

Water levels in the southern region fell to 39.691 billion cubic metres, 73% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in this region, the data showed. The water levels in the region during the same period last year were just 38% of the total live storage capacity.

 

In the southern region, 10 reservoirs had water above 91% of the total storage capacity with two reservoirs full, the data showed. There were two reservoirs in the southern region with water at 40% and below the storage capacity or less.

 

Of the 155 reservoirs, 145 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 10 reported storage at 80% or lower of the live capacity. Out of these 10 reservoirs, three reservoirs have water storage of up to 50% of normal storage.

 

Since Jan. 1, the country has received 67% below normal rainfall at 1.5 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
