NEW DELHI – The Congress party on Thursday criticised the goods and services tax regime and alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has created the world's worst tax system. "GST has affected ordinary traders, the middle class, and consumers. Even farmers have not been spared. Narendra Modi had promised to double the income of farmers, by imposing GST he doubled the cost of farming," Congress leader Pawan Khera said addressing a press conference. He termed GST as "Gabbar Sitharaman Tax".
Demanding a new GST policy in the upcoming Budget, Congress leader and Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi said the burden of the GST is mostly borne by the poor and middle-income people. "Poor people don't pay income tax, but because of GST, the poor and middle-income people pay a higher amount of tax than the rich people," Gogoi said.
The common citizens of the country pay more than two-thirds of the tax, but the share of "Modiji's favourite people in GST is only 3%", Congress Rajya Sabha member Shaktisinh Gohil said. "Manmohan Singh had said GST is meant to give relief to people, not to loot them, but the Bharatiya Janata Party did the opposite," Gohil said.
The press conference was part of the Congress party's countrywide campaign against GST. The party organised press conferences in different cities in the country on Thursday against the new tax regime, which was introduced in the country in 2017. End
