IMD sees western disturbance causing wet spell over northwest India Fri-Sun

MUMBAI – A western disturbance, as a cyclonic circulation, lying over southwest Iran and its neighbourhood is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over parts of the western Himalayan region over the weekend, and light to moderate rainfall over the plains of northwest India and adjoining central India from Friday to Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said Thursday.
Thunderstorms are also likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Saturday, the agency said, adding that parts of Rajasthan and south Haryana may experience hailstorms.
Meanwhile, cyclonic circulations lying over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean are likely to bring heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Sunday, and light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over a few parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on the weekend, and over Kerala and Mahe on Sunday and Monday, the weather bureau said.
Additionally, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is also expected over parts of the northeastern states Monday, the agency said.
Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to continue during the late nights and early mornings over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, the weather bureau said. Dense fog is likely to prevail over isolated pockets of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Tuesday, it said.
The weather department has predicted cold wave conditions over isolated pockets of Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh on Thursday and over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh till Friday.
Minimum temperatures could rise by about 2-4 degrees Celsius during the next four days in northwest India, after which they will gradually fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius, the weather bureau said. In central India, minimum temperatures could rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius in the next three days, and fall gradually by 2 degrees Celsius thereafter.
Minimum temperatures could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in Maharashtra and Gujarat during the next two days, after which they will fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius in Gujarat. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over east India in the next two days, and a gradual rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius may be seen thereafter. End
