NEW DELHI – In an attempt to woo Jat voters votes ahead of Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include Delhi's Jat community in the Centre's list of other backward classes. This will help the Jat community of Delhi to get the benefits of reservation in Central government institutions, Kejriwal said.
"The Bharatiya Janata Party's central government has been deceiving the Jat community for the last 10 years. Now it should fulfil its promise," said Kejriwal at a press conference. He said the Jat community is included in the Delhi government's other backward classes list and is availing reservation benefits in the institutions of the Delhi government.
In a letter written to the prime minister, Kejriwal claimed that Modi had made a promise to Jat leaders of Delhi in March 2015 that the community would be included in the Centre's other backward classes list. He said Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah betrayed the Jat community of Delhi by not fulfilling that promise.
"There are seven Central universities in Delhi, including Delhi University, which has dozens of colleges. The Delhi police, Delhi Development Authority, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi Municipal Council, etc are central government institutions. Jats of Delhi are not getting the benefits of reservation for admission and employment in these institutions," Kejriwal said.
According to reports, the Jat community is one of the dominant caste in Delhi and comprises around 8% to 10% of the total population.
Earlier, Kejriwal had announced several welfare schemes for senior citizens, backward classes, women and priests as the party seeks a third term in the national capital.
The assembly elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase on Feb. 5, and votes will be counted on Feb. 8, the Election Commission of India had announced Tuesday.
The AAP, which has been in power for the last 10 years, swept the 2020 state polls, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the rival Bharatiya Janata Party could muster only eight seats. The Congress even failed to open its account. End
