PM Modi inaugurates 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention

NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The Prime Minister also flagged off the inaugural journey of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express.
Praising the diaspora for their contributions to India's growth and their efforts in enhancing India's image worldwide, Modi hailed the country's rapid economic development over the last 10 years. "In the last 10 years, over 25 crore (250 million) people have been taken out of poverty. India is now also the fifth-largest economy in the world, and soon will attain third place."
He further said that "the Indian diaspora has excelled worldwide. Their accomplishments make us proud."
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a biennial flagship event of the Ministry of External Affairs which is held in different cities on Jan. 9 to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of their homeland. The day is also marked to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on Jan. 9, 1915.
The foreign ministry has organised a three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas' convention themed 'Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat' in collaboration with the state government of Odisha in Bhubaneswar. Delegates from over 75 countries have registered to attend the event.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train for the Indian diaspora and flagged off under the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana initiative, has been scheduled to depart from the Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi to enable visiting Indian diaspora to travel to various tourist and religious spots across India over three weeks.
The convention will conclude on Friday, with President Droupadi Murmu conferring the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to distinguished members of the Indian diaspora. End
