NEW DELHI – India and Afghanistan have agreed to promote the use of Chabahar Port for trade and commercial activities, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Wednesday met Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Dubai and held discussions on several issues pertaining to bilateral relations and regional developments, as per the statement.
"It was also agreed to promote the use of Chabahar Port for supporting trade and commercial activities, including for the purpose of humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan," the ministry said in the statement.
The Chabahar Port, located in south-eastern Iran on the Gulf of Oman, is partly intended to provide an alternative for trade between India and Afghanistan. In May last year, the Indian government had signed a 10-year lease agreement with its Iranian counterpart to develop and operate the Chabahar Port of Iran. Shipping and Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had then said that the Chabahar Port will offer an alternate route to India for trade with Iran, Afghanistan, Eurasia, and Central Asian Republics.
At Wednesday's meet, Misri underlined India's historic friendship with the Afghan people and the strong people-to-people contacts between the two countries. In this context, he conveyed India's readiness to respond to the urgent developmental needs of the Afghan people, as per the statement. "In view of the current need for development activities, it was decided that India would consider engaging in development projects in the near future, in addition to the ongoing humanitarian assistance programme," the ministry said.
