India gets 59% below normal rain at 1.3 mm in week ended Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received an average rainfall of 1.3 millimetres in the first week of 2025 that ended Wednesday, 59% below the normal of 3.2 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. The east and northeast region was the only homogenous region to record above-normal rains, while the other three regions recorded below-normal precipitation.
Rainfall in east and northeast India was 26% above normal during the week at 4.3 mm. Northwest India received 67% below normal rains at 1.8 mm and the central part of India received 100% below normal rainfall during the period at 0.0 mm, the data showed. South peninsular India recorded 0.3 mm of rainfall, 88% lower than the normal rainfall for the period.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was 'large excess' in two and 'excess' in none. One subdivision received normal rainfall during the week. Three subdivisions received 'deficient' rains, 10 had 'large deficient' rains and 20 subdivisions received no rainfall during the week.
Since Jan. 1, India has received 1.4 mm of rainfall, 64% below the normal of 3.8 mm for the period. End
