NEW DELHI – The Congress party Wednesday announced that it will launch the Jeevan Raksha scheme in Delhi, which will provide health insurance cover of INR 2.5 million to the people, if voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections. Announcing the scheme at a press conference, senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said the scheme will work like the Chiranjeevi scheme of the Rajasthan government.

"The Delhi Congress has decided to include the 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana' in its manifesto for the upcoming elections. Under this scheme, health insurance coverage of up to INR 2.5 million will be provided. A similar initiative was launched in Rajasthan, offering free treatment of up to INR 2.5 million for all residents, with no mandatory conditions," Gehlot said.

This is the second welfare scheme the Congress has announced ahead of the Delhi assembly elections. On Monday, the Congress party announced the 'Pyari Didi' scheme, under which it promised to provide financial assistance of INR 2,500 per month to women if it forms the next government.

The assembly elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase on Feb. 5, and votes will be counted on Feb. 8, the Election Commission of India announced Tuesday.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, which has been in power for the last 10 years, had swept the 2020 state polls, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the rival Bharatiya Janata Party could muster only eight seats. The Congress even failed to open its account.  End
