NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government on a petition by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. seeking police action on unclaimed vehicles lying at their service centres after they were brought in for repairs. The high court will next hear the case on Mar. 19.

Maruti Suzuki referred to a workshop in Naraina, Delhi, where 14 vehicles had been abandoned by customers. In spite of giving notices to the owners, nobody came to take those back, the automaker told the court. The only course of action left was to approach the police, Maruti Suzuki said, adding that they had given notice to the police asking them to take custody of these vehicles.

The single-judge bench of Justice Jyoti Singh, who was hearing the matter, asked Maruti Suzuki how it was the responsibility of the police if the car was delivered by a private individual at the service station. "Tomorrow if someone comes to my house and leaves a car, what will Delhi police do?" asked Justice Singh.

The high court told Maruti Suzuki that this was a "luxury litigation", and the company should come up with some other remedy for these abandoned vehicles. Maruti Suzuki said that some of these have become end-of-life vehicles and were causing pollution too. "Where do we go?" the company asked the court.

The high court told Maruti Suzuki to frame a policy for the repair of vehicles. These are Maruti Suzuki's customers and the petitioner has to make out a better case for roping in the police authorities, said the high court. The petitioner said it was a pan-India issue and required larger consideration.

At 1216 IST, shares of Maruti Suzuki India were up 0.6% at INR 11,788 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
