NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India Tuesday announced that assembly elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase on Feb. 5, and the counting will take place on Feb. 8.
The term of the 70-member Delhi Assembly ends on Feb. 23. With the announcement of election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in Delhi, which prohibits announcement or launch of schemes and any financial grants till the results are declared.
According to the commission, there are 15.5 million registered voters in Delhi. Of them, there are over 8.3 million male voters and 7.1 million female voters. The commission said that 13,033 polling stations will be set up in around 2,697 locations.
In 2020, Delhi Assembly polls were announced on Jan. 6 and the polling was held in a single phase on Feb. 8. The counting of votes took place on Feb. 11. The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, which has been in power for the last 10 years, had swept the 2020 state polls, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the rival Bharatiya Janata Party could muster only eight seats. The Congress even failed to open its account.
This time, the Delhi elections will see a three-way contest between the Congress, the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party. While the AAP will be eyeing a hat-trick, the BJP and the Congress will fight to regain their foothold in Delhi. The Congress failed to open its tally in last two elections after ruling Delhi for 15 years. The BJP was confined to single digit in the last two assembly elections. All three parties have kicked off the campaigns for the assembly polls. The AAP and the Congress have announced several welfare schemes to woo voters. For the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated several development projects and addressed public rallies in Delhi.
The Delhi polls will also witness several high-profile contests. Former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to face former BJP Lok Sabha member Parvesh Sahib Singh and former Congress Lok Sabha member Sandeep Dikshit in the New Delhi constituency. While Parvesh Singh is the son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh, Sandeep Dikshit's mother Sheila Dikshit had led the Union territory since December 1998 to December 2013.
Chief Minister Atishi will contest against former BJP Lok Sabha member Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress' Alka Lamba in Kalkaji. AAP leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who was in jail for 17 months in connection with Delhi excise policy, will contest the Jangpura seat. End
