MUMBAI – Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi on Monday urged the Bureau of Indian Standards to consider hallmarking of silver because of growing consumer demand, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in a release. "There is a consumer demand for hallmarking of silver as well and urged the Bureau of Indian Standards to deliberate on it," Joshi said at the 78th Foundation Day of Bureau of Indian Standards.

Over 442.8 million articles of gold, jewellery, and artefacts have been hallmarked so far, Joshi said. He also lauded the bureau for its legacy and unwavering commitment to upholding the core values of quality, trust and excellence, according to the release.

The Bureau of Indian Standards' quality marks have become a symbol of trust across multiple sectors, promoting agriculture, manufacturing and technology. About 94% of Indian standards have been harmonised with the International Organisation for Standardisation and the International Electrotechnical Commission standards, Joshi said.  End
